The Bull Hawgs Story

Barbecue photos

In April of 1999, An obsessive compulsive  set out to Columbia, SC to cook in a Whole Hog Contest with a close friend and old fraternity brother. This old friend had some knowledge of cooking BBQ also, not just Whole Hogs. It was quite a weekend and the team ended up placing and winning a trophy. This touched the heart of the man from Spartanburg and in just a few weeks, he had built his own cooker.

After much trial and error, a lot of help from professionals,(Thanks Kevin & Valerie) and patience and tolerance from family, Bull Hawgs Barbecue was born. Bull Hawgs started in its early days as a competition cooking team. In August of the same year, the team entered The Bubbafest.

Scores were decent for it's inaugural contest and a pioneering period began. Several more contests followed and the team traveled to NC, SC, and Florida to compete. Bull Hawgs high point in competition was a State Championship in the poultry category in 2001. As contest grew less popular due to expenses exceeding prizes, catering became much more popular and it paid better too.

Thanks go out to my dear friend Danny for teaching me everything  I know about catering. Bull Hawgs kept on cooking it's BBQ as if all it's customer's were judges and the results were profound. Folks liked the pulled pork we were cooking and so instead of sacrificing quality for a buck, Bull Hawgs kept on cooking it's pork the same way it always has. From the Heart.

Lots of folks kept telling this compulsive barbecue cooker to open a business. As he perfected a sauce that everyone liked as well, the cooker found himself suddenly unemployed and looking for work. He came to the conclusion after a series of discussions with his family and especially his mother (Thanks Mom) that life is no practice round. You only go around once so to speak. Might as well do what is going to make you happy. This BBQ man happens to love cooking and seems happiest when folks like what he cooks.

So here we are! Our actual conception date as a business is February 6th, 2003. We hope you like our barbecue and keep coming back.
